About me

Emma Yates — integrative counsellor & psychotherapist in York

Hello, I’m Emma

I’m a qualified therapist based in York, offering a calm, supportive space where you can begin to explore what’s going on for you, at your pace.

I work with children, adults, young people, and couples, both in person and online. People come to therapy for many reasons — anxiety, low mood, trauma, grief, identity, relationships, or feeling stuck or overwhelmed. Whatever brings you here, my aim is to walk alongside you with empathy, curiosity, and care.

My Approach

My approach is integrative, which means I draw from several therapeutic models, tailoring sessions to meet your individual needs. At the heart of my work is a belief in the power of authentic connection — that healing happens when we feel truly heard, accepted, and safe enough to explore our inner world.

My core training was in transactional analysis with Northern Guild Counselling and Psychotherapy. I hold a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, with a specialism in working with Children and Young people. This course was accredited by both UKCP and BACP. I undertake regular supervision and continued professional development to ensure ethical, grounded, and up-to-date practice. I am also a registered member of BACP, committed to working with integrity and respect.

My recent and ongoing professional development includes Inside Autism (theautisticadvocate.com/onlinelearning/). This is a training which strips back the stereotypes arising from looking at autism from a non-autistic viewpoint, providing insight from multiple autistic perspectives, centered from an autistic viewpoint. I am also completing The Grove’s foundation certificate in Couple/Relationship Therapy which has been awarded Thematic Training Accreditation by CORST at Level 5. Alongside my private practice, in which I work from home and from the Priory Street Centre in central York, I volunteer as a counsellor with York Women’s Counselling. I am also a sessional child psychotherapeutic counsellor at The Retreat Clinics in York.

Therapy isn’t about fixing you — because you are not broken. It’s about gently understanding the parts of you that have been hurt, silenced, or lost, and helping you reconnect with your own voice, values, and strength.

My aim is to walk alongside you, with care, as you reconnect with your inner resources and make sense of life’s challenges.

From music to therapy

Before training as a therapist, I worked for over two decades as a professional harpist and music teacher. I began learning the harp at age eight and went on to perform at weddings, events, and concerts, as well as teach students of all ages and abilities. Alongside classical training, I was drawn to the more therapeutic aspects of music — creating calming compositions, facilitating meditative experiences, and exploring how sound can help us settle, soothe, and feel.

That deep listening to mood, rhythm, unspoken emotion, now shapes the way I work in the therapy room. I bring a grounded presence and a creative, relational approach, tailored to each person I work with.

How I work

I believe in taking an integrative, client-centred approach to therapy, meaning that the way I work is always tailored to meet your unique needs and goals. Whether you’re seeking therapy for yourself, your child, or your family, I draw on a wide range of theories and therapeutic approaches to provide the most effective, holistic support possible. Some of the key methods I incorporate include:

Transactional Analysis

Using Transactional Analysis, we can explore the different parts of you that may be in conflict, helping to create internal harmony.

Inner Child Work

Exploring and healing the part of you that holds emotional memories from early life, enabling you to re-parent and nurture yourself.

Attachment & Child Development

Understanding how early attachments and developmental stages shape your relationships and emotional well-being.

Humanistic Therapy

A holistic, person-centred approach that focuses on fostering personal growth, self-acceptance, and living authentically.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Exploring how your unconscious mind, early experiences, and past relationships influence current behaviours and emotions.

Relationship Therapy

Helping partners identify and transform negative emotional patterns, fostering deeper emotional connection, improved communication, and a stronger, more secure relationship.

Once we’ve made contact, I will provide further details about how I’ll work with you and/or your child, as every individual and family is unique. Together, we will explore the most suitable approaches to help you heal, grow, and reach your goals.
